Hand held PICtroller - £65
Handheld PICtroller

This is a self contained hand held unit that provides most of the functionality of the panel mounted version, including automatic detection of motor type. This unit has Direct and Inertia & Brake modes, one brake position plus emergency stop. There are no external inputs to control braking, etc. Two preset controls adjust the maximum speed and braking/acceleration rate. The unit is supplied complete with a 5 pin DIN plug and socket. The lead length is 5 feet.

PLEASE NOTE THIS CONTROLLER WILL NOT WORK WITH A LOCOMOTIVE FITTED WITH A DCC CHIP RUNNING IN ANALOGUE MODE - THE CHIP NEEDS REMOVING TO WORK WITH THE CONTROLLER

Instructions for use

The PICtroller has four main controls - regulator, reversing switch, brake switch and mode switch. There are two LEDs - output (green) and overload (red) and two preset controls - inertia and max speed.

The PICtroller is provided with a 5 pin DIN plug and socket with four connections - AC in (Bk & B wires) and track out (R & Y wires). The pin connections for the socket are shown below.

The mode switch allows two modes of operation - Direct and Inertia & Brake. In direct mode the regulator controls the speed directly. In inertia mode the speed gradually increases or decreases to the speed set by the regulator. In both modes the brake switch reduces the speed. The first brake position reduces the speed gradually, the second position (emergency stop) reduces the speed to zero immediately.

The inertia preset control sets the inertia and braking rates. The max speed preset control sets the range of the regulator control.

Like the panel mounted version of the PICtroller, the hand held version automatically detects the type of motor fitted to the loco - coreless (eg Portescap) or cored. If a cored motor is detected both LEDs flash briefly - for a coreless motor only the output (green) LED flashes.

If a high current (>750mA) is detected, the output is turned off and the overload LED lights. The PICtroller monitors the load and when the overload is cleared, the overload LED clears. If the overload occurs only for a short time, the previous output is restored otherwise the output resets to zero.

The PICtroller is suitable for operating with any type of motor, including coreless motors such as the Portescap range. The PICtroller automatically senses the motor type and adjusts the operating parameters to suit cored or coreless motors. To do this the PICtroller generates a short pulse as the locomotive starts which also serves to overcome the initial resistance to movement and start the locomotive more easily.

Panel PICtroller

Three driving modes are provided on the PICtroller – Direct, Inertia & Brake and Coast & Brake. Braking rate, acceleration rate, creep speed (see below for an explanation of creep mode) and maximum speed can be preset. There are 2 brake positions plus emergency stop.
Optional external inputs are provided to allow for various forms of automatic or semi-automatic operation, including initiation of braking action and forced reduction to creep speed. An external voltage can also be used to control the PICtroller in any of the three driving modes.

The PICtroller is guaranteed against faults in manufacture for 1 year from purchase.
